DIY Farmhouse Doll Bed

Remember when you were little and you had all your little dolls to play house, doctor, school, and whatever else with? There were the dresses, shoes, doll houses, and everyone had a different special name?

Can’t say that I do! Lol I had one or two dolls I played with, but I remember using Legos the most and then crafting in later years. Maybe having two brothers affected that, who knows!

When I found out our first child was a girl, I wondered what sort of toys she would feel led to… Well I can tell you it certainly wasn’t dolls! She received a few as gifts, but rarely played with them. Now animals??? That’s another story – we currently have Noah’s ark residing in the living room!  Second are the trucks, tractors, and trains.

Nevertheless, there is one doll that caught her attention earlier this year. It was her Aunt’s Rainbow Bright doll from around 30 years ago. (Yay Grandma for keeping it all this time)! But even that one only comes out every few weeks.

So obviously, when I had the opportunity to make a doll bed for a niece, I jumped on it!

I used a tutorial from Ana White, and everything went very well. You can find it here: http://www.ana-white.com/2010/11/doll-farmhouse-bed

There are a couple things I did and would do differently if I made another one, which I talk about below. Overall it was a fun project! I’m thinking I might make a day bed version for some of my daughter’s animals to sleep in – we’ll see!

One thing I would change next time for assembly of the headboard and footboard: Just use wood glue and a nail gun to attach the panels to the rail boards. Even with pre-drilling the holes, the panels kept splitting on me when screwing together.

I also opted to use a Kreg Jig to attach the side rails to the frame boards. I figured the less holes to fill the merrier!

Here it is fully assembled! A few coats of white wall paint and it was good to go!

Great Grandma sewed a mattress, quilt, and matching pillows to go with it! Amazing work! I do not have the patience to sew detailed work like that! So much love makes gifts like these the best!
