Simple Hallway Organization Idea!

Everyone has one area of their home they dislike organizing. If you don’t – please let me know what your secret is! For us it’s the end of our kitchen counter. Everything inevitably gets dumped there after walking in.

After a while, Jason asked me to make something to go on the wall by the door leading to the garage. I was happy to oblige! We decided there should be a place for envelopes, hooks for keys, a spot for a purse. A “charging station” would be a bonus. My design preference is a mix of metal and wood. I looked at what I had on hand but didn’t find much.  Shopping it was!

Hobby Lobby is one of my favorite craft stores, so that’s where I went. I don’t normally shout out a particular store, but they have the best selection of hooks, knobs, baskets, and other organizers available in store. It’s dangerous for me…

A trip to the garage produced a piece of wood and I was ready to start putting everything together. It was so simple, I pretty much had it finished in 3 days. You could easily do it in 1 day without kids. The longest part was waiting for the stain to dry! Below are the steps I followed to create hallway organization.

Tools used

Miter Box, Orbital Sander, 80 Grit Sanding Disc, Drill, Drill Bit (size will vary pending type of wall anchors), Wall Anchors & Screws, Stain, Nails, Tape Measure, Pencil

Wood Needed

Totally up to you! A piece large enough to accommodate everything you want.

How to Create A Hallway Organizer

Step 1.) Cut board to desired length.

Step 2.) Sand board using the orbital sander. I only used 80 grit since I wanted to keep the rough texture.

Step 3.) Stain board (if desired) and let dry. This is a cedar board stained Special Walnut.

Step 4.) Drill holes in the board where the metal organizer will be placed. I opted to mount the entire board to the wall with these holes using flip toggle anchors.

Step 5.)  Attach hooks. The 3 little hooks on the bottom required nails (they weren’t included, slight bummer). The coat hook required screws, which came with it.

Step 5.) Optional:  Drill a hole in the bottom of metal organizer for charging cord. Insert rubber grommet (this will protect the cord).

Step 6.) Drill holes in the wall where board will be mounted. Insert anchors.

Step 7.) Mount your board to the wall!

Wala! Simple Hallway Organization

Of course, there’s now a hoodie and some grocery bags filled with stuff also hanging on it. But this picture will be a good goal to keep in mind, right?!?
