How to Know if You’re Worthy

What makes you think you can do this? Are you sure you understood God right? Is what you have to say even worthy of people’s time? Why would God choose me in the first place? I’m so not worthy of this assignment!

Such were the thoughts circling my head the last few weeks. It came as quite a blow since I spent the last few months unraveling my purpose and sensing confidence from God that yes, I’m on the right track and yes, He values my thoughts and words.

It never ceases to amaze me how quickly self-doubt and discouragement take over. Some days I recognize the battle for what it really is; Satan trying to waylay God’s work. Other days it swallows me whole and the lies become truth.

Seeking an Answer

Have you ever experienced this? Wondered why you were chosen for a task when you don’t feel worthy or capable? Tried to figure out what you have to offer others? Hoped to feel accepted even if you failed? Upset with yourself for not having better self-esteem and faith?

Sometimes it is tempting to answer the question of worth/value/love by evaluating happiness, counting friends and family, assessing finances, placing importance on significant others, or tallying accomplished life goals.

Overtime, I’ve learned those things don’t matter. What I haven’t learned, is how to permanently imprint what DOES matters in my mind and heart.

As I worked through the self-doubt and discouragement this last time, I felt God asking me one simple question. “Are you human?”

Well yes, God, of course I’m human. “Than let me remind you, that as my child I love you unconditionally and deem every person worthy of my love, time, and sacrifice. No strings attached. Let everything else fall to the side.”

At first, His reply was hard to accept because I have been let down by others. So I reminded myself, again, that God has stayed true to His word. Then I found several places in the Bible talking about God’s love for me, you, and all His other children.

God’s Answer

The apostle Paul informs us in Ephesians 1:4-6 that God’s plan from the beginning of time, has been to adopt us through Jesus Christ into His family. He desires to be our Father! He wants us!

Psalm 100:5 tells us the Lord’s love endures forever, throughout all generations. He doesn’t selectively choose who he loves, it’s everyone!

In Romans 8:38-39 Paul writes that once we have accepted God’s love, nothing can separate us from it. Not death, time, other powers, or distance.

Jesus’ parable of the wondering sheep in Matthew 18:10-14 demonstrates God’s passion for seeking out the lost and vulnerable. He would leave the ninety-nine to come find the one.

In Luke 12:7, Jesus tells us the exact number of hairs on our head are counted.

Those are some heavy declarations of love, showing just how worthy we are to God. I don’t know about you, but I don’t have time to sit down and count every single hair on my children’s head! I don’t think they’d sit still long enough.

Human Response

Amena Brown speaks about the danger of not relying on God in her book Breaking Old Rhythms. She says, “The more we hold on to people and things and stake our existence, validation, and worth on whether or not those people and things fail us, the less peaceful we are and the more we will find ourselves with hearts that turn away from God.”

God’s love and opinion of us goes way beyond any earthly person or tangible thing ever could. It doesn’t matter what our past or present circumstances looks like. His love is there for the taking and will never change.

So, are we worthy and loved? Yes, we are.

I pray God’s simple yet profound question and answer will be imprinted on all our hearts.
