Navigating Life’s Interruptions Positively

Does the following statement hit you as hard as it did me???

I’m working through Priscilla Shirer’s “Jonah: Navigating a Life Interrupted.” It’s made me pause several times to evaluate my responses along with the emotions they bring.

As a homeschooling mom to three young kiddos, the constant interruptions throughout the day lead to irritation. Especially when it’s during “mommy time”.

As a woman trying to balance motherhood, businesses, being a wife, and leadership; I find life’s bigger interruptions even more irritating.

As a Christ follower trying to deepen my relationship with the Lord, I sometimes hesitate, question, ignore, or postpone what’s being asked.

In all of these scenarios, it’s easy to justify the response because we’re: busy, tired, our cup’s empty, working on something non-negotiable, need to pay the bills, in a season of life, only asking for 10 minutes, etc…

Priscilla shares, “Interruptions only become positive when we consider the person or the circumstance interrupting to be more significant than that which currently occupies our attention. It is easy to say that God and His plans are our most essential endeavors. It is entirely another thing to live like this is so.”

After reading that, I thought, “Wow, Peggy! What does your behavior say about how you value your family and most importantly God???”

During prayer, God showed me the word: Entitled. I quickly connected the dots to see how this attitude leads to me thinking what I’m doing is more important. That because of all I do, I deserve a break or an easier life or that God should know I can’t handle another trial/project/melt down.

Perhaps we all need to re-evaluate from time to time.

Abba Father, May we remember You come first, then those around us, and then ourselves. We acknowledge obedience might bring hardship, but cling to the fact there will be blessing in the end. Help us remember it’s better to live inside Your will and refrain from delaying, ignoring, or running away. Fill us with the ability to see each of life’s interruptions as a way to serve You and those around us. Amen.
