Recycled Jewelry Wall Organizer

The day I got an “official” jewelry box was a special one. Being in middle school I didn’t have much to put in it, but it was still perfect. Plus, it meant I could organize! Every little girl’s dream, right? For years it worked perfectly for the smaller necklaces and few earrings I had!

When I started working in an office, I started accumulating more and the smaller jewelry box wasn’t quite big enough, especially for the longer necklaces.

Now I’m a stay at home mom with 2 little kids. I’m lucky if I remember to wear my wedding ring! However, I wasn’t ready to part with all of it just yet, so I needed to create somewhere to put it. I was not going to shell out a hundred or so dollars for a new, bigger one though, so I decided to make my own!

My criteria for the new organizer: look somewhat rustic, cheap materials, done quickly, like it! After looking at a few ideas online and surveying how much “table space” was available in the master bedroom I decided to go for one mounted to the wall. I’ve been happy with it!

Here’s how I did it:

A trip to the garage (having wood laying around is so handy!) and I had 4 boards picked out. It didn’t take long to cut them to size, sand, and stain.  The Kreg Jig made assembly easy.

Another look in the garage and I found a thinner piece of particle board for the back. A trip to the basement rendered a fabric square to use on top of the backing. A few layers of spray adhesive attached the fabric.

Used the staple gun to attach the particle board to the frame.

What took the longest was figuring out what kind of hooks to use. I didn’t want the standard teacup kind. I could have bought some cute ones from a craft store, but those add up quick. Then I had the idea that maybe I could cut up some old metal clothes hangers. Jason showed me this special channel locks that allowed me to bend “more precisely”, not leave teeth marks, and I was sold.

I played around with spacing to see how many hooks I would need/what looked good, then cut and bent the hanger pieces.  I drilled holes just a tick smaller than needed for the hooks, dabbed some wood glue into the holes, and inserted the hooks.

Once it was all done, I hung up to enjoy! Wasn’t overly concerned about a spot for earrings because I don’t really wear them. Now I have a spot for the longer pieces, shorter pieces, bracelets, rings, and a small bag for miscellaneous stuff! And the best part – I just recycled things already laying around the house!

To finish adding interest to the wall I added a bunch of photos – all asymmetrically placed of course! I love how it turned out and that it gave me the opportunity to bring some of my favorite picks to the bedroom. And yes – occasionally you’ll find one of the kids pushing a chair up to the wall to browse and try on. More memories!
